1. Method
- Interactive and fast-moving presentation of selected theories behind patient-centred communication and their application to the patient with a neuroendocrine disease or condition
- Review of pre-filmed consultation role-play sessions, feedback, and group discussions about what techniques work
- The role-play sessions will explore difficult communication tasks, such as:
- Relationship-building and rapport
- Breaking bad news
- Managing patient expectations and uncertainty
- Discussing treatment options and clinical trials
- Managing angry and emotional patients

- Theories of patient-centred communication including the “Two agenda model”
- The Cambridge–Calgary Model for patient consultations
- The “SPIKES” protocol for breaking bad news
- The “Three talks model” and “SHARE” approach to shared decision making
3. Impact
- This module will help physicians adapt their consultation style to enable a more effective consultation with their patients
- Physicians will gain greater confidence in the management of challenging clinical situations, such as breaking bad news
- Physicians and patients will be more satisfied with the outcome of consultations
- Patients will be able to take a more active role in decisions regarding their cancer diagnosis and treatment
Learning objectives
After completing this module, participants should be able to:
- Explain the verbal and non-verbal behaviours that characterize a patient-centred consultation
- Describe some of the theories that describe effective patient-centred communication during a medical consultation
- Explore your own communication style and how you can adapt your technique to become a more effective communicator
- Apply knowledge to improve communication in challenging situations such as breaking bad news or discussing clinical management and participation in clinical trials
